Out of the Box Illustrations

Illustration has consistently been my most valuable method of expressing myself, finding it’s a limitless visual medium to bring my ideas to life. Shar- ing previously under-represented ideas and stories is a major factor in Out of the Box. The book features 25 biogra- phies of disabled activists, adventurers and artists from New Zealand, each one with unique stories and experiences you may not have heard before. My illustrations accompanying 12 of these people’s stories are meant to convey the excitement and accomplishment of their experiences, showcasing their indi- vidual successes and progressive work. This project stood out to me not only for the chance to utilize my illustration skills, but also because it would be an educational opportunity for myself and readers to learn more about this commu- nity. I valued the accurate representation of people’s physical abilities and traits, paying careful attention to create the best image through thoughtful discus- sion and research.
