The initial inspiration for my collection was the concept of ‘toxic masculinity’ particularly in New Zealand, incorporating the Greek philosophy of stoicism, and military elements.
The name “Stoic” is a school of philosophy founded in Athens during the 3rd century BC by Zeno of Citium. To describe a person, as ‘stoic’ today would be to describe them as indifferent to pain, pleasure, grief or joy.
The imagery on the garments is a depiction of a scene in Book 9 of Homers’ The Odyssey, where Homer and his men blind the cyclops Polyphemus after getting the cyclops drunk. The influence for my colour palette comes from infrared imagery that is typically associated with military camera technology. I chose this imagery due to the military connection in the Odyssey and my own experience of hyper-masculinity within the military itself.
My collection sits in the modern landscape of streetwear meets high fashion, incorporating sportswear elements.
