My collection ‘Insane Cracks of Beauty’ is about mental illness.
Insane: a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behaviour, or social interaction. Cracks: damage and imperfections on the surface. Beauty: a combination of qualities that pleases the senses, especially sight, in its aesthetic. These words and definitions create an emotive narrative around my body of work.
The collection contains my key value of sustainability implemented through recycling scrap fabric, zero-waste design and incorporating sustainable fabrics such as linen, cotton, silk and hemp. The hand-painted imagery on my garments is an abstract ‘self-expression’ of how I personally perceive mental illness to look and feel.
Mental illness may affect people but people are not the illness.
