Communication – What Is Communication Design?

I chose Communication Design because I want to do the creative things I love but be able to apply myself in a way that has purpose, meaning and impact on the world around me. Design consumes my life, in the best possible way. The creative process drives me to continue to grow and develop each outcome I refine and create. Every outcome I produce is an opportunity to grow as a designer and enhance how I approach my design. Design gets me out of my comfort zone and pushes me to take up new opportunities.

For my final project, Tiahli Curran-Hogg and I Collaborated by creating a multimedia marketing campaign for the Otago Polytechnic Design Communications course. Our aim was to create an overall personality and style for the design communications department that can easily be applied in short and long video format to be used either on social media or the Otago Polytechnic website. It needed to be real and versatile to our target audience and be convincing enough to not scare students away and ensure that they are capable of doing design communications.

I also had the incredible opportunity to take part in a student exchange this year to the Fashion Institute of Technology for their spring semester, It was incredibly intense and educational. I was able to create a lot more independent projects and establish more of my own personal style. Though it was challenging it is an experience that has shaped me as the designer I am today.
