Kia ora, my name is Elayna Amezcua and I am a Communication Designer. I was born in Ohio, raised in Colorado, and migrated to Aotearoa with my family in 2011. Currently based in Ōtepoti, I work both as a collective member of Black Star Books and as a freelancer. Being a Communication Designer, I draw together ideas; collecting, weaving, and articulating them through designerly compositions. My designs utilise illustration, imagery, print, and craft skills (I specialise in bookbinding and environmentally sustainable praxes). My final project, Flighty, is an artbook released in collaboration with twenty-four young local artists. Existing in response to the disregard of youth arts and culture in Ōtepoti, Flighty celebrates and legitimises with all our complexities included.
