As fashion designers in a world with an abundance of textile pollution, it is our responsibility to be consciously aware of the textiles we choose to design with, as it is these textiles that will determine the sustainability of the fashion industry. I believe the fundamental understanding of fashion design should be to offer sustainable solutions that will reduce this problem.
My collection Disfigure was deconstructed and recreated using 100% reused second-hand textiles. In combination with inspiration drawn from science fiction this collection consists of raw edges, intricate seam work, and laser etching, to encompass a body of work that speaks to a strong aesthetic and the importance of sustainable solutions in an unsustainable industry.
Globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year 95% of which could be reused or recycled, as designers we need to take advantage of this and design clothes that reduce this statistic and make use of what’s already in circulation.
