As a designer I create fashion with a sense of purpose, personal to my own life experience. Being a young woman of Ngāti Ranginui who has lived in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, my hybrid identity has a big influence on my creative outlook. I embrace my Whakapapa and the importance of my Māori individuality in bicultural Aotearoa. I value our role as kaitiaki and the importance of acting sustainably as designers. I am passionate about the expression of identity and believe that collaboration and supporting local creatives is key to preserving culture and talent.

My graduate collection represents myself and my sister and our creative identity with a focus on hybridity. We work as a collaborative team to merge our disciplines of visual art and fashion design. Using 50% recycled materials, we use a mixed palette of fabrics and medias to represent the almost ‘chaos’ that comes alongside hybridity, and the complexity of identity construction.

Showcasing how the process of my art reflects the process of my identity, I present this idea as a journey – and our creative identity is growing with us on this journey.
